      I'm always kind of a bad person to ask this, because for people who are really sensitive to it I know it's a big deal. Me? Unless it outright starts to interfere with my success I don't tend to sweat it or even think about it much. Given how attractive it can be I'm surprised it isn't a bit more troublesome, but I'm not sure it is perfectly smooth by any means.

  • @DetroitAlan01
    @DetroitAlan01 3 дні тому

    Respectfully disagree. The grappling hook mechanic is fun, at first. Before too long, it takes Rusted Moss from being a metroidvania and makes it more of a physics based, precision platformer. Pretty sure the reason for the devs including so many adjustable settings, including the ability to fly, is because they couldn’t get through their own game with the grappling hook that acts way more like a bungee cord.

    • @NindieSpotlight
      @NindieSpotlight 3 дні тому

      I'm with you on it not being great, something I ended up emphasizing in the review, including not giving them an out from the angle of accessibility options which feel more like an admission they know it's problematic than trying to help. That said, I think it's made for the folks who want to be challenged and something different, which it accomplishes. But yeah, for grappling I'd choose something like Kunai by a huge margin since there it's completely intuitive.

    • @ak-ub1ym
      @ak-ub1ym День тому

      U mean like Bionic commando? Not the shooter version but the platformer version. Way I see it , this game is pretty similar to that but that game still handled like a metroidvania despite platformer style gameplay.

      Unfortunately, no, instead of their being multiple lanes of attack and it being more tactical worrying over that this is a single lane and a bit more spammy by comparison. On Switch the games most like it are Swords & Soldiers and Warpips.

    Thanks for the review Justin. Your comment echo another review I watched. Fun concept - but sounds like a grind fest with those blatant difficulty spikes. Mobile-esque, as you said. Oh well, I still have lots of hope for Metal Slug Tactics! That one still looks very promising, with the recent previews.

    • @NindieSpotlight
      @NindieSpotlight 5 днів тому

      Yeah, the shame is until I hit the wall I liked it, and it felt like a decent alternative to things like Swords and Soldiers 2 Shawarmageddon or Warpips... but then it just got bogged down and fell apart in terms of being fun. As for Metal Slug Tactics, yeah, excited for it, though the Steam Next Fest Demo I put up some video for game me some concerns. Part of it is that controller support wasn't in place, and some of the mouse and keyboard commands didn't feel great either. It seemed to be a smart idea though, and definitely had some new rules and tactics that made it look like it could be exciting and challenging though.

    • @sfbsfb
      @sfbsfb 5 днів тому

      Oh, I didn’t check out your review video for Metal Slug Tactics. I suspect they’ll get the controller support sorted out, given that they plan to release on consoles. Lots of tactics games play well on consoles, so hopefully the controller interface will be decent enough in this case (fingers crossed). That said, I know that some games originally developed for PC lean heavily on mouse and keyboard. Some of them get their controls adapted well to consoles, others less so. And some never get console ports. There’s a nice one called Shardpunk that I think would be great on consoles - but I haven’t heard of any plans to bring it over. Another one, Wildermyth, is supposed to get console ports. Quite a unique game, with procedurally generated narrative elements.

    Some outstanding picks on this list. Great list Justin. Quick feedback on a few - Shatter Remastered: very nicely done Breakout-style game with a few novel twists. One Finger Death Punch: tons more fun than one might expect. I guess it boils down to being a rhythm game, but a compelling one with trappings of other genres. Super Mega Zero: truly a precision platformer, gets very challenging quickly. But very inventive and clever. subpar pool: executes its concept quite well, with some light rogue-esque aspects. Spelunky: a pivotal game in my history; truly popularized the action rogue-lite as we know it. Devoted months to this game until I developed the skill to beat it several times. Derek Yu intends to release UFO50 this year, I think! Hell Is Other Demons: not widely discussed but a very good action rogue-lite of sorts. Not easy but well-executed and rewarding. Galacticon, Annalynn: two entirely different games, but both hark back to 80s arcades in the best possible way. I’d also put Donut Dodo in this group. And all three are published by Flynn’s Arcade.

    • @NindieSpotlight
      @NindieSpotlight 5 днів тому

      Oh yeah, Donut Dodo would be on there, but it's in both the Top Action and Top Retro lists already and I have a policy to not allow any game into more than 2 lists (other than the top 100) in the interests of giving as many games their shot at a list as possible. Do we really need the likes of Dead Cells and/or Hades dominating a ton? Nah, we'll make room for other folks. :)

    • @sfbsfb
      @sfbsfb 5 днів тому

      Great point! So many lesser-discussed games that are fun and worth highlighting. I see a few more great ones on your list, some 2D shooters. Grand Brix Shooter, had a lot a lot of fun with that one. Also Debris Infinity, Horizon Shift ‘81, and Switch N Shoot! All are well crafted in the details. And those last two really pair well with a Flip Grip or similar device. Apologies though, I wasn’t intending to critique any of your choices - I just happen to think of those three Flynn’s Arcade games in similar terms. There is something about my mind, such that when one of them is mentioned, I feel compelled to bring up the other two.

    • @NindieSpotlight
      @NindieSpotlight 5 днів тому

      @@sfbsfb Oh, no offense taken, and I encourage people to share regardless. Was just pointing out something I have periodically in comments concerning there being "rules" behind the scenes so sometimes there'll be games that are omitted in a list that would obviously suit them and it just happens to be because they'd already hit their quota. In particular for games that are "challenging" and make that list that happen to be something like a Roguelike X, either the Roguelike or the X list won't have them. Just always helping people understand is a priority since it doesn't always make sense without an explanation. :)

      It has merits, but the challenge is whether it grabs you quickly and deeply enough when put up against a fair amount of competition offering up many of the same general elements, even if not specifically the weird goings on where the storyline is concerned. Since that's a pretty slow burn it's great if you stick with it, but the challenge is getting people there and patiently waiting for the payoff.

But it would be better if there was a quick explanation of the game's concept with different gameplay footages of it, then only after, the pure silent showing of gameplay. • @NindieSpotlight
      @NindieSpotlight 8 днів тому

      In terms of the volume there are a number of elements. First, my kids are grown and minimally in college so I finally have more free time once again. Second, the benefit of the majority of indie games is that you can fundamentally understand what does and doesn't work with them pretty quickly, honestly. Granted, things that are story-driven that's less true, but what sinks or raises most of them is clear not even very far into playing them. Third is that I've never really been fearful of the blank page, I have reviews to get done and shit to do, staring and over-thinking doesn't work, just need to get what's important on the page and keep moving. It doesn't always make for the best quality, true depending on the week/day/hour/minute, but this is a volume operation and that's just how it has to be. As for Roundguard, yep, it's a really novel game and I love Peggle, so I wish there were more attempts at Peggle roguelikes. I even have one on my phone called Peglin I play quite a bit. :)

    • @NindieSpotlight
      @NindieSpotlight 8 днів тому

      As for Dicefolk, it had a mean addictive hold on me until I was able to beat the main final boss, and that took some time, but it was worth it. Really, the risk and reward you need to survive, trying to pick the right combination of creatures who have bonus powers that compliment each other, and then getting a few pieces of gear to work in tune with those powers... when it comes together it's magic. I've found you really need to have one loaded up reasonable damage, high health and/or healing monster to mostly stay in front to be the abuse magnet but then have some power where they're retaliating, triggered by rotation, or something else where they have opportunities for extra attacks and damage every turn. You then want one support who can be triggered to do damage even not being in the lead, and you want to boost their strength to make them a constant bastard, hammering the enemy without even being at the front. The final should either give support with healing, shields, or supplementally buffing your other creatures to make them survive better or do even damage. My winning run I found that someone who applies thorns to any ally who attacks really juiced up retaliatory damage in a hurry. Just the strategies needed for success felt different, the creature skills and relics really encouraged experimentation, and when you come up with a good plan and see it executed it can be so fun. :)

    Id like to hear more about the stories. No hate i appreciate the info u did have for us but curious about the sound design/ any frame issues / controls / story. How long did it take u to beat. Thank u. Have a good one

    • @NindieSpotlight
      @NindieSpotlight 8 днів тому

      In general I'll just say that unless there are outright problems that begin to creep in and interfere with gameplay I don't tend to be a frame rate guy. If it's bad, yeah, I'll say so, but otherwise I don't consider it noteworthy typically. Sound design is roughly the same, unless the voice acting is particularly bad or there's some outright issue again I won't tend to bring it up. Controls, if they're awful or particularly good, I'll bring up, but consider this isn't really a title where the controls play an enormous factor, there's not much to it so little room to do anything egregious. As for taking the time to beat, this isn't that channel. Most weeks I'm playing and reviewing 15 games or more a week... so beating games is more a function of me having the time and personal desire. The thing is, there are plenty of outlets that will tell you every detail, even many I'd consider filler or uninteresting, but that may just be me. My goal is never to do what everyone else does though, so my goal was to instead cover far more breadth to the point where I could actually apples to apples compare not every game of a certain type but most of them. Exhaustive reviews have their place, but in a world of 30+ indie games hitting the system on a typical week that leaves a shit ton of them without even an acknowledgement. I'm the person trying to at least give you a reasonable amount of gameplay video that hasn't been altered, edited, or interfered with, letting you see and experience it directly (which is also why I don't tend to spend time on visuals or sound unless there are absolutely problems). My reviews then tend to be to cover what may be a normal pro/con list, going over what really stood out as good and what stood out as bad. My goal has never been to be all-encompassing, that's what the majority of other people offer, and if you want to supplement with that, you know where to find them. I'm more the consistent voice, not trying to figure out which writers at a site are good or bad, not trying to know whether they really have a direct basis for their comparisons, etc. It's a choice, by both necessity and my personal goals for the site I've gone in my own direction.

I'll definitely sub for that. I appreciate the human side to youtube. Question. Any games on switch you'd recommend. I'm a huge indie game fan. I just got moonstone island. And playing thru a ridiculous amount more. I just started bloodstained ritual of the night. Doom eternal (with my son) umm honestly like 20 more I've been bouncing around from. But anything that ur loving ?????

      @@Blackda222 Ha, relieved that you don't mind the response.. more often than not people go off the rails when I'm honest about what I'm doing when they ask. It isn't the vibe for everyone. :) As for what I'd recommend, look for the Best Of channel, go to the proper site for the top lists page, or do a search on best "insert genre here" indie games and see my lists. Most of them are 100 strong, and there's even a straight Top 100 indie games on Switch list which gets updated about every 6 months, the rest are updated maybe every 6 months to a year depending on the size of the list and genre turnover. Checking out those lists, you'll definitely see I have opinions and that there are a lot of games in pretty well every genre that cross over into other styles... so shooters will include classic arcade, FPS, roguelikes, and just about anything you could imagine. With indies the traditional genre expectations are getting blown up, and this channel is one that's trying to help people see that. In terms of personal recommendations, since literally I have so many in my head, you'd really need to specify the genre and speed you're looking for. I really see the merits of games in pretty well every space at this point, and some of the stuff that I get addicted to I understand may not be everyone's speed so the lists can be deceptive in terms of knowing what my personal preferences are past the top few. :)

      Oh, and if you're new there's a schedule to things: Monday: Top Deals (indie games that I've reviewed that scored over a 7.5 on sale for more than $5) Tuesday: Top Steals (indie games that I've reviewed that scored over a 7.5 on sale for $5 or less) Wednesday: A top genre list refresh (this week is the top 100 indie budget titles [games whose regular price is $10 or less]) Friday: Top sales of both indie or AAA games I've reviewed that are on sale going into the weekend So plenty of content and opportunities out there to see all sorts of games from the past 7 years worth your time... My indie Switch review count is over 3800 at this point, there's a lot out there. :)

      Considering the jittery and inconsistent framerate playing solo that wouldn't have been a great idea

      Honestly, at this point I don't remember specifics but in pretty well all cases my problem was missing something in an area I was in, usually a route that I didn't go back and check as I moved through initially. It can be frustrating in that way, not really providing any guidance when you get into those situations.

      At the rate I need to keep playing new games every week (I've averaged 15+ per week over the course of 7 years now) I really rarely do return passes unless I'm really loving the game. Not the case here though. :P

    The video lists Dreamlight Valley as "0% off" but it *is* actually on sale at 25% off (it's US$29.99 but is normally $39.99).

      While I get the sense that no matter what it's on it can only look so good, yeah, this feels like a game that's best suited to mobile overall... not blown up on a much bigger screen
